Last night, the RHOA season 10 reunion had social media abuzz. If you keep up with the show, throughout the season there’s been tension surrounding comments made by Kim Zolciak-Biermann and her eldest daughter Brielle Biermann. After attending an event at Nene Leakes’ home last year, a video surfaced on social media of Brielle in Nene’s bathroom, filming some bugs that happened to be her home. Long story short, Kim ended sending the video to the rest of the RHOA cast, referring to Nene’s home as a “roach nest.” For obvious reasons, this comment was very upsetting to Nene and other cast members (except messy Sheree). Nene and the others felt like the comment had a racial bias behind it, as roaches are often associated with the projects. Kim, of course, said that there was no racial bias behind her comment, and repeatedly stated that she and her family are colorblind.
This isn’t the first occasion where Kim has denied making racist comments, and whether her intentions are pure or not, she has done and said things that could be interpreted as racially condescending.
However, on last night’s reunion, her comments on racism today branded her as the official mascot for white suburban housewives. She said, “This whole racism thing in this day in age is bullshit. Every one of those motherfuckers on that couch owes this world a fucking apology for this racism shit,” Zolciak said. “They already tried to claim that shit long ago. Nobody bought into it then because the social media wasn’t there and racism wasn’t fucking all that real. You know it.”
Racism in America has been alive and prevalent since the time it was settled; and just because we’re integrated, or Jim Crow has been done away with, doesn’t mean that racism doesn’t exist anymore. It’s people like Kim, people who have platforms, that try and disparage the struggles black people in America have faced an continue to face. Kim is the face of privilege, able to navigate through life without feeling the effects of racism towards her or her family. Whether she chooses to be ignorant about the issues that black Americans face or she simply doesn’t care, doesn’t distract from the fact that Kim’s mentality is a common one. Social activists and others who speak out against injustice have been labeled as “whiners” or people who want to stir the pot and the cries of victims of racism go unheard because they are brushed off by people who think that racism isn’t “fucking all that real.”
Social media did not make racism real; it has helped shine a light on an issue that for too long was something that was only spoken about behind closed doors. For Kim to cry and accused these “five African-American woman” of “harassing” her for pointing out her blind racism only proves the point that there are still people left in this country who ignore the reality of what’s going on and live in a disillusioned world.
It’s also amazing to see how someone who so often imitates black style and trends, who fills her lips to look like a black woman, can so quickly dismiss racism. This only goes to show how much people are willing to imitate and replicate, but don’t want to uplift those who they are trying to be like.
What did you guys think about Kim’s comments? Is she being racist? Is blind racism real?
